Florida edging toward 50% higher education attainment

Updated U.S. Census data shows that Florida’s higher education attainment rate continues outpace the national average. Florida is now ranked at #22 in the U.S. for completion of college degrees and workforce-related credentials, according to the Florida College Access Network.

Regional data through 2017 shows the Tampa Bay area outpacing both state and national rates for higher education attainment.

The latest data shows Florida’s higher education attainment rate increased to 49.6%, while nationally, the rate stands at 48.4%. Those figures include an estimated 8% of adults in Florida who hold a relevant workforce certificate.

As the Tampa Bay region often reflects state trends, LEAP Tampa Bay uses the same credential figure to estimate its overall attainment rate. Including the estimated 8% of adults with a relevant workforce certificate, the Tampa Bay region’s overall postsecondary attainment rate as of 2017 – the most recent year county-level data is available – stands at 51.3 percent. The attainment rate for the counties served by LEAP Tampa Bay College Access Network grew 3.2 percent in the four years after 2013.
